Careers in Theatre Week returned for our first project of 2025 and 48 young people took over our wonderful building for the week.
What a way to start 2025! We welcomed 48 young people from across Greater Manchester to do work experience with us for a week but with a bit of a twist.
Careers in Theatre Week is for young people aged 14-19 to get an insight into theatre industry careers. Our annual work experience event includes workshops with Royal Exchange Theatre staff, artists and practitioners, discovering the different elements that make a producing theatre come to life.
We had a jam-packed week full of incredible workshops. Leading the week we had actor & young company graduate Gurjeet Singh, alongside incredible Director and facilitator Gitika Buttoo. As part of the week we gave the young people an insight and taster of as many jobs and careers in theatre as we could. We had incredible facilitators such as Brief Encounter & Escaped Alone & What If If Only designer Rose Revitt, Playwright & Artist Reuben Johnson, Director Nickie Miles-Wildin & Casting Director Liv Barr. Also the students had fun with our staff learning and having a go at costume, prosthetic makeup, wigs, lighting, sound and much more! We also got the parents involved where we gave parents the opportunity to come into the theatre, look around and ask our panel of staff for advice or any questions to support with their young persons careers in the arts.
This year we really made the conscious effort to capture the some data around the week from our participants too. We learned that:
- 93% of attendees had a more rounded knowledge of careers in theatre by the end of Careers In Theatre Week
- 94% of attendees felt more comfortable in the building/ theatre space by the end of Careers In Theatre Week
- 92% of attendees felt the content was varied and engaging by the end of Careers In Theatre Week
