The Elders Company presents eight brand-new rehearsed readings
Exploring Expectations is a rehearsed reading of eight brand-new plays, written, directed and performed by the Elders, with an exhibition of design concepts about each play created by a group of Elders designers.
Exploring Expectations is the culmination of several months work by 45 elders who are graduates of the Elders Company. Together they have been involved in writing, directing, designing and performing to create this event and learn more about staging new work.
In March 2023, eight elders, supported by writer and Bruntwood Prize finalist Jill O’Halloran, began developing scripts in response to the themes of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens adapted by Tanika Gupta, which is currently on our main stage.
Later in the year, different groups of elders took part in directing and performing courses with director Andy Barry. The writers and directors also took part in a discussion with director Hannah Tyrrell-Pinder and writer Billie Collins from Box of Tricks about staging new work. Theatre Designer Amanda Stoodley led another group of elders to develop design responses to the writers’ scripts. The designers also met with Royal Exchange costume supervisor Felicia Jagne as well as visit our Props and Costume stores.
On Monday 2 October, the full company came together for the first time and throughout the week, have been working to prepare the rehearsed readings you will experience. We hope to exceed your expectations!
