Mary's illustrative record of a Local Exchange Ambassador's journey is now being exhibited in our building on the Mezzanine Gallery!
This exhibition records Mary Burke’s journey of being a Royal Exchange Theatre Local Exchange Ambassador for Cheetham Hill and Crumpsall. Mary has been an Ambassador since 2019 and has sketched all their activities including meetings, performances and their trips to the Royal Exchange Theatre.
These sketches are documented over six books and you can now see all her paintings and drawings in the mezzanine of The Great Hall. Make sure you head upstairs and see her artwork.
MEET MARY
Mary recently completed a master’s degree in Illustration from Manchester Metropolitan University, after being a nurse for 40 years. She has chronicled her entire journey as an ambassador through the sketchbooks displayed.

WHAT IS LOCAL EXCHANGE?
Local Exchange is our community engagement programme which sees the theatre take up residency in communities across Greater Manchester. Together we create arts activities and opportunities responding to the needs of the community. This includes our annual community festival THE DEN, which is programmed in partnership with the Royal Exchange Theatre and the Local Exchange Ambassadors.
We collaborate with local people who are passionate about the place they live in and excited by everything that arts and culture have to offer! Mary is one our amazing Local Exchange Ambassadors.
