OUR AUTUMN SEASON & COVID PROCEDURES

We are committed to welcoming you back, with a focus on the wellbeing and health of all our visitors and staff. 

We are delighted to share live theatre with you once more, and through autumn, will keep Covid safety procedures in place. In brief, these will be:

● Enhanced cleaning of touchpoints
● Hand sanitisation stations are available at the theatre entrance and throughout the hall
● Asking all visitors to wear masks inside the building (including during performances) unless exempt. Staff will continue to wear masks.
● Asking all visitors to check-in via the NHS Track & Trace app
● Reducing the capacity for all shows, in order to minimise contacts and offer seating options with more space
● Offering selected shows for all performances where all seating will be fully socially distanced

OUR OPENING HOURS

As well as being open for performances, The Royal Exchange is now open in the daytime once more. From 11am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday (and Monday to Sunday in December), The Rivals Café will be serving hot drinks, cakes and snacks; meanwhile, A member of our Visitor Experience Team will be on hand to help with ticketing enquiries.

  • How To Book and Ticket Prices
  • You can purchase tickets on our website. To book, please visit tickets.royalexchange.co.uk

    If you are visiting us in person we are open 11am-5pm Monday to Saturday (and Monday to Sunday in December) and tickets can be purchased from our Visitor Experience Team based at the St Ann’s entrance.

    We are currently operating with e-tickets only. When your booking is complete, whether online or in person, you will receive two emails. The first email will be your Order Confirmation. The second email will contain your e-tickets. You'll need the e-tickets within this email to show upon entry to the Theatre. If you don't receive this email, you can check your online account and once logged in, scroll down to the option 'E-Tickets' and all your current and past e-tickets will be here. If your tickets aren't here or there is a problem downloading them, please contact our Visitor Experience Team.


    In order to reduce contacts and congestion in the theatre and offer greater covid safety, our autumn programme is operating at 70% capacity.

    Selected performances for each show will be fully socially distanced. For these events, seating is arranged in socially distanced clusters, which are groups of tickets containing a specific number of seats (1, 2, 3 or 4) next to each other in one row. Please choose where to sit based on the number of seats you need.

    To encourage social distancing, there are no group discounts for in-person shows.

  • What time should I arrive?
  • The theatre and café will be open from 11am, Monday - Saturday (Monday Sunday in December). You will be able to take your seats in the theatre auditorium around half an hour before the show starts.  

    We ask you to keep your masks on at all times, including inside the auditorium, unless you are medically exempt or are briefly removing your mask to eat or drink.

  • The Rivals Bar & Restaurant
  • The Rivals café is open from 11am for hot drinks and snacks (including award-winning cakes). The Rivals will also be operating a bar before each performance and during intervals.

    The Rivals restaurant is temporarily closed.

  • Covid Guidance
  • We are continuing to operate various Covid-19 safety procedures for all our autumn/winter shows. We ask all visitors to the theatre to: 

    • Please wear a mask and keep it on at all times (including in the theatre auditorium during the show) unless you are medically exempt. You may, of course, remove the mask briefly to eat or drink. 
    • Please download the NHS Test & Trace app – we ask that each individual in your group scans the QR code on arrival. If you don’t have the app we can provide you with a form when you arrive. 
    • Please do not attend if you have Covid symptoms, a positive test result, or have been asked to isolate. See below for more information on what to do if you are unable to attend due to Covid. 
    • Please use the hand sanitising stations at the theatre’s entrance and throughout the hall.

    While all performances are operating at a reduced capacity to reduce congestion and overall contacts in the theatre, we are also offering a selection of fully socially distanced performances.

    For these socially distanced performances, our seating for in-person shows is arranged in socially distanced clusters, which are groups of tickets with a specific number of seats (1, 2, 3 or 4) next to each other in one row. Please choose where to sit based on the number of seats you need.

  • Getting to the Royal Exchange Theatre
  • Our address is the Royal Exchange Theatre, St Ann’s Square, Manchester M2 7DH.

  • Coming into the building
  • At present we will only be opening the St Ann’s Square entrance pre-show. There is step free access, with a lift directly to the Great Hall. Both entrances will be open in the daytime 11am-5pm and as an exit after the show. 

    We ask you to keep your masks on at all times, including inside the auditorium, unless you are medically exempt or are briefly removing your mask to eat or drink.

  • When you arrive
  • We ask you to keep your masks on at all times, including inside the auditorium, unless you are medically exempt or are briefly removing your mask to eat or drink.

    When you arrive keep to the left-hand staircase, unless you need the lift. When queuing please keep a 1m distance. Please have your eticket ready for scanning when you enter. You will need your eticket again later when taking your seat in the auditorium.

    Our cloakroom is closed, please do not bring any large bags with you. Our security team may check smaller items.

    Once you get inside there are hand sanitising stations throughout the hall.

  • My E-Ticket
  • Once you are in the building, the team will check your e-ticket by scanning the barcode - please have it open on your phone or your printout ready.

    You will need your e-ticket again later when taking your seat in the auditorium.

  • Food & Drink in the Theatre Spaces
  • No glass is allowed inside the auditorium.

    You can take sweets and chocolate into the show with you but we ask for these items to be as quiet as possible (no wrappings) so that everyone can hear the action on stage.

    You cannot take hot food in with you.

    Please only remove your mask as briefly as possible when eating or drinking.

  • Cloakroom
  • Our cloakroom is closed, please don’t bring any large bags with you.

  • Toilets
  • There are two sets of toilets, including accessible toilets, which are cleaned regularly to keep up with COVID safety standards.

  • Mobile Phones, Photos and Recording/Filming
  • Once you take your seat in the auditorium, please make sure your phone is on silent.

    Photos and filming are not allowed during the actual performance, but please do take as many images of our unique stage and building as you like before and after the show, and during the interval. You can always share them with us on our social media channels @rxtheatre

  • Intervals
  • Most productions have one 20 minute interval, giving you time to get a drink from The Rivals and have a stretch.

  • How do I check my credit balance?
  • You can check your credit balance by logging into your Royal Exchange account and then scrolling down to where it says Account Credit, your balance will show up there. (Forgotten password)

    When you're ready to use it to pay for future tickets, there'll be an option on the checkout page for you to use any available credit to pay for your order.

    If you have outstanding tickets with us from our 2020 season from shows that were unable to take place, and you have not already heard from us, your tickets are being converted into credit. You can use this credit to buy tickets online by logging in or signing up to your Royal Exchange Theatre account. Credit will be available for 12 months. If you can’t see your credit, please contact our Visitor Experience team.

  • What happens if I can no longer attend due to Covid?
  • We will offer an exchange, credit or refund if you or any member of your party are unable to attend due to; Covid symptoms, a positive test result, or a requirement to isolate.

We will then get back to you to process your credit/refund within the next couple of days. We may ask for proof.

  • As Cultural Venues across the city-region begin to re-open their doors and spring to life once again, as a sector, we want to reassure audiences and visitors alike that your health and wellbeing are our utmost priority. No two venues will respond to the introduction of Stage 4 of the Government’s ‘Roadmap out of Lockdown’ in exactly the same way. Our venues are of different sizes, shapes and operate in different ways appropriate to the needs of those individual businesses. What is consistent, however, is the thrill and excitement our artists, production companies, staff and volunteers feel at the thought of being able to share great art and culture with you again face to face. It has been a tough old time, but we’re back, side by side and cannot wait for you to join us.
